Ping to Mars, anyone? ;-> Traditional transport protocols including TCP don't fare well in the presence of long delays, so alternative protocols are needed. The authors discuss architectural challenges in dealing with these sorts of networks aptly named as Delay-tolerant networks, or DTN. The authors note two challenges with co-resident VMs when resources are shared. First, due to high overheads of switches and events in host/guest domain and VMM. Second, very costly the communication overhead between co-resident VMs. To address this challenge the authors are proposing using BPF arena as a foundation alongside socket maps and sockops infrastructure to solve this problem. Live migration of VMs with pass-through virtual functions is essential for hypervisor infrastructure. In this talk the authors detail the evolution of the various design aspects of the spec, implementation challenges, their solutions, comparisons against vendor-specific approaches and IDPF. Jasmine Mou and Krz Sywula give a moonshot talk on using Machine Learning Optimization Algorithms in HTTP Latency Tuning on Nginx. Jasmine and Krz discuss techniques for dealing with the massive number of tunables to identify the best parameter combinations for different workloads, and streamline the process to minimize human intervention. They focus on optimizing HTTP latency for an Nginx server. In this talk they discuss their methodology and share their experimental results. Maryam Ataei Kachooei, Joshua Chung, Amber Cronin, Benjamin Peters(a)viasat.com, Feng Li, Jae Won Chung and Mark Claypool talk about a new TCP slow start algorithm SEARCH(Slow start Exit At Right CHokepoint). The authors state that with SEARCH they resolved challenges in wireless links with premature exits from slow start. They will share their kernel changes and results on experiments on WiFi, 4G/LTE, and low earth orbit (LEO) and geosynchronous (GEO) satellite links. John notes that TCP already has all kinds of classical goodies built into the HW offload infrastructure, example TSO, HW GRO, checksum, etc and he wants to take advantage of them. He proposes to masquerade HOMA as TCP on the sender and then disambiguating at the receiver. Amery and Xiaochun observe that increasing link speeds are inducing the growth of number of flows seen on the wire, with a mix of long or short flows. Unfortunately traditional CC algos like CUBIC favor long flows which conflicts with application desires for throughput and latency. Zijian and Xiaochun improve usability over MSG_ZEROCOPY as well achieve a 7% improvement over MSG_ZEROCOPY with TCP. This session will dive into technical implementation, challenges overcome, and the implications for future zerocopy network application development. The authors look at such devices from a host perspective and present brief data on the offload improvements and more focused analysis of traditional performance improvement techniques (ZC, TSO, etc) and argue that we need to have a symbiosis of traditional approaches with the new offloads. 0x18 talk: Multi-PF single netdev

Tariq Toukan will discuss creating multiple PFs for a single NIC in a multi-socket server, each with its own PCIE interface. Why do we need this you ask? Imagine a NUMA machine... you plug in a NIC.... as it sits today, the NIC gets connected on one of the NUMA nodes. If your application is running/scheduled on a different numa node then network traffic traverses over the internal bus between the sockets. The consequences are observed as significant latency, CPU utilization, and decreased network throughput. In this talk Tariq describes the Multi-PF technology under the Nvidia netdev driver which overcomes these challenges. The Multi-PF approach enables several CPUs within a multi-socket server to connect directly to the network, each through its own dedicated PCIe interface. 0x18 talk: PSP Crypto Protocol and HW Offload

Arun Acharya, Anjali Singhai Jain, and Willem de Bruijn will give a talk on PSP. PSP is a security protocol that incorporates lessons from experiences with currently deployed L2, L3 and L4 crypto protocols. PSP, originally developed and deployed at Google, shares many concepts with IPSEC and is encapsulated in UDP to avoid network issues with less common IP protocols. PSP is purposely built to scale. It does not store an explicit SA in the ingress direction, but generates the ingress key on NIC from a device master key, combined with the SA SPI embedded in the packet.
