0x14: Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

We would like to provide more updates on our planning around Coronavirus (COVID-19). This update is based on the current state of affairs. We will provide more updates as the situation changes. Conference registration levels are continuing at the expected rates as previous two netdev conferences. As mentioned in past communication, here's what we are using for guidance on our decisions: 1) There are two *larger* conferences that are happening in Vancouver at the same time frame and neighborhood as us. We are in particular paying attention and communicating with our friends at the IETF drawing guidance from them. IETF has a much larger staff than us and we are grateful and lucky that we can draw on their resources to guide us. IETF is reporting that their registration is continuing per expectation. 2) We are also constantly monitoring the guidelines provided by World Health Organisation (https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019) and Public Health Agency of Canada (https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronav…) neither of these organization are recommending cancelling meetings at this point. https://apps.who.int/iris/rest/bitstreams/1269109/retrieve For Netdev conf 0x14, we are going to implement the following guidelines which we draw from what the IETF 107 is putting in place: 1. Measures to prevent transmission by surface contact: a) We will provide all in-person participants with hand sanitizer and surface wipes free of charge. Surface wipes will be available in multiple rooms for cleaning any shared equipment or surfaces, such as microphones and door handles. b) We are going to ask that you do not feel obliged to shake hands with anyone and also do not feel offended if anyone declines to do so. 2. Measures for anyone who feels unwell to prevent them spreading infection: a) We are setting aside a room as an isolation room supplied with masks and a thermometer for anyone who feels ill during the meeting. b) We are making arrangements with a local clinic so that we can call a doctor to attend to anyone in self-imposed isolation to minimise their travel through communal areas. 3. Guidelines for travellers who are from highly affected areas where travel is government restricted. Currently, as per WHO, some parts of China fall under this class. If you are planning to register or have registered, and arriving from China (or have passed through the China recently) please contact us first we will like to discuss with you remote participation as an alternative. 4. Guidelines for attendees affected by corporate travel restrictions: We are looking at setting up satellite location(s). A satellite location makes sense when we have a good number of attendees willing to participate. If you think you fit in this setup, please contact us. We are investigating logistics of good video conferencing facilities that will work well with the conference AV setup. 5. (As previously advised) Changes to our cancellation policy: a) Anyone who is unable to attend due to government imposed travel restrictions will be eligible for a full refund. b) We will continue with the normal policy of providing a full refund to anyone who is unable to travel due to visa issues. c) We will not be offering full refunds in the event of someone being unable to travel due to corporate restrictions - the cancellation fee will still apply. 0x14: Update on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) issue

Hi, With our conference date approaching we would like to update you on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) issue as related to the conference. We plan to provide more updates in the next few days. For now, the NetDev Society board would like to state the following: We understand that as part of human nature some people are very concerned about the risk to health, and that some other events have been cancelled or switched to a remote-only model and infact some companies are putting corporate travel restrictions into place. However, it remains our view that there are significant risks in both under-reacting and over-reacting to this complex and developing situation, and as we are not epidemiologists or public health experts we will follow the evidence-based advice of those that are. At the moment, conference registration levels are continuing at the expected rates as previous two netdev conferences. Therefore, I was wondering if there is a possibility of remote participation? We are honored to announce networking industry visionary Nick McKeown as the keynote speaker for Netdev 0x14. Nick McKeown has been a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University since 1995. In 2005, he started the Clean Slate Program at Stanford, which with Martin Casado and Scott Shenker, led to "Software Defined Networking". He co-founded Nicira (now part of VMware), Abrizio, and Nemo ("Network Memory", now part of Cisco), as well as ONF, ON.Lab, and P4.org. He also co-founded Barefoot Networks in 2013, which was recently acquired by Intel, where he is now Senior Fellow. His current passion is to move the network data-plane from fixed-function hardware up and into software where it belongs. He hopes this will foster much faster innovation in networking, and finally hand over the keys to those who own and operate networks, to customize them to best suit their needs. Nick is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK). He received the British Computer Society Lovelace Medal (2005), the IEEE Kobayashi Computer and Communications Award (2009), the ACM Sigcomm Lifetime Achievement Award (2012), and an Honorary Doctorate from ETH (Zurich, 2014). What does Nick want to talk to us about? Nick has a vision on how we can work together to realize a world where owners of large networks can express the behavior they want in their network using a high-level language, and then seamlessly compile and deploy it across all their various network devices. In this talk Sagi Grimberg will look back at the journey and experience gained so far in the last year since introduction of kernel NVMe/TCP. He will then build on that context to describe various experiments conducted to measure performance - more importantly the latency achieved with current kernel NVMe/TCP. Part of the experiments will explore different NIC vendors' features (Intel ADQ, Mellanox aRFS, etc) that can be put to bear on behalf of improving overall performance and latency. Sagi hopes to create a discussion based on some suggestions on what he believes are useful enhancements that can be made to the driver. IETF Hackathon event

Network kernel bypass is becoming more common. Often the given rationale to bypass the kernel is that it takes too long to develop and enable the kernel for new features. Kernel bypass opens the possibility of multiple, independent agents trying to independently (and directly) use and manage resources. This breaks the assumption that the kernel is the central system resource manager. The sanity and security of the system can be compromised. In this talk, Carolyn Wyborny and Tom Herbert will look at this issue with the perspective of SR-IOV’s Virtual Functions (VF); they will introduce the problems of control and security in the context of kernel bypass. They will propose some potential solutions and finally they hope to initiate a community discussion on the topic. It has been brought to our attention that there are countries which may impose outbound travel restrictions of their residents as a counter-measure to coronavirus (2019-nCov). Our understanding is this applies mostly to our colleagues in Asia who want to attend netdev 0x14. It is also likely that by the time we get close to the conference things will be under better control than they are right now. We would like to optimistically keep on moving forward with registration. Please register and take advantage of the early bird rates. We will reimburse 100% of the rate to any registered attendee who is unable to travel because of government imposed travel restrictions. If you are a big shop like Google you are always looking to squeeze all the performance juice you can out of your CPUs. Given the large number of machines deployed, a 1% performance improvement could mean millions of $$ in savings in both capital and operational costs. In this talk, monsieur Eric Dumazet - the man sometimes refered to in passing as some form of ninja - will describe changes introduced by Google that help double TCP receiver efficiency in their datacentres. Imagine you have only one more bit left in the world! Scratch that. Imagine there is only a half bit left in the world. Then imagine there are multiple causes vying for this half bit. Who would you give it to and why? Yes, these things happen;-> A lot easier when it is between developers and a lot harder when it is to decide a standard that shall be cast in stone. The Internet Engineering Task Force (ietf) Transport Area Working Group (tsvwg) has such a struggle going. There are presently 2 proposals before for the last unused code point in the IPv4/6 header - one by the Low Latency Low Loss Scalable throughput (L4S) folks (see Netdev 0x13 for L4S talks) and another from the Some Congestion Experienced (SCE) folks. In this talk, Rodney Grimes will describe the two solutions and their prototype kernel implementations; what changes are made to both TCP and IP layers, etc. Rod is then going to pose the $1M question and solicit feedback: is one approach better than the other or do we need a new outlook? Being able to marry new Linux technology with existing "legacy" infra is valuable to allow for continuity. XDP is a relatively new technology introduced in Linux networking which enables more efficient packet processing. A common desire is to allow "legacy" packet processing functions to take advantage of the speed advantages offered by XDP. In addition to the efficiency factor, XDP also provides a time-to-market advantage: new network packet processing features can be added without need to go through the complexity of the upstreaming process. Toshiaki Makita and William Tu are still in pursuit of getting openvswitch to use XDP. In this talk Toshiaki and William attempt to marry OVS to XDP via: 1. Attaching XDP from kernel through UMH (user mode helper), 2. Reusing TC HW acceleration interface 3. Attaching XDP from OVS userspace daemon The authors will describe their approaches and challenges faced. After all that hard work MPTCP has finally been merged! In this talk Mat Martineau, Ossama Othman and Peter Krystad will provide advice to developers, ops and distros how to make good use of the upstreamed MPTCP. They will discuss kernel considerations, report on upstream merge progress to date, and introduce the Multipath TCP Daemon(mptcpd) to the Linux networking community. Kubernetes(k8s) Container Network Interface (CNI) is a specification for managing network resources on a kubernetes cluster. CNI enables plugin-based networking solution for containers ranging in functionality from IP address management to access control policy management, QOS, etc. Operators can pick and choose from the many packaged and open CNI implementations that exist or could create custom CNIs to serve their needs. In this talk Rony Efraim and Liel Shoshan describe how they approach hardware network offload enabling in k8s. Rony and Liel will illustrate offloading with a bunch of CNIs that can be used in conjunction with OVS. In addition, they will also describe how to offload for other K8s use cases like pod-to-pod intra networking and enhancing ingress service load balancing via dp_hash. And last but not least the speakers will describe challenges faced and future work. As the commercials say - 5G(Fifth Generation) networking is here. Why is that a big deal? One appealing aspect: How do you like getting multi-gigabit bandwidth to your mobile device(s)? How does that work? For the first time in commercial mobile networking history a vast untapped spectrum has been made available for mass user consumption in the millimeter wave length range; in the 5G world it is refered to as "mmWave". The spectrum in mmWave links makes possible the multi-Gbps data rates on the 5G cellular networks. The problem with mmWave links is they are, like most high-frequency signals, susceptible to blockage. Basic obstructions like trees, snow, rain, buildings, etc interfere with the signal. A technique called beamforming helps but doesnt solve the problem entirely. To put this in context: Think of having a link that is very high speed but is constantly fluctuating in capacity. Then the question is: "How does TCP congestion control work in this kind of setup?" In this talk Feng Li, Jae Won Chung and Jamal Hadi Salim[1] will present results of a study to evaluate how various Linux TCP congestion control algorithm implementation fare over mmWave links. The authors claim this is _the first ever_ such study on a real commercial 5G network! The study was carried on the Verizon 5G deployment network. Feng et al will present data on comparing popular TCP congestion control algorithms, including NewReno, Cubic, BBR and BBRv2 (prepatch) etc. The results show that the performance of TCP on mmWave links is still highly dependent on the combination of TCP algorithm and socket buffer sizes. Without a doubt mmWave links impose new challenges on future transport layer design and the authors hope this talk will incentivize more discussions in the community.
